Did you ever see him in Bigger than Life Pip? He plays a crazed Christian on Cortisone who thinks he is Abraham, which is unlucky for his son. Fantastic movie.
Hey, coming down your way this weekend Lilith, storms permitting. Been about 4 years since we were last in dear old Zummerset. Bringing our friends Northern delicacies such as oatcakes and Hendersons relish.
Well I never! Some people won't watch black and white movies? You are missing out big time Kev. I am only 43, it's not like I was born when Lolita was published, and I have never read it, nor have I seen the James Mason film, but I simply cannot believe the naivete of Woolies Execs naming a little girl's bed "Lolita!" It would be like naming a little boy's bedroom the Pete Townsend Suite.
Lilith, shame on you. Lolita is a great book, though the ending is disappointing. But the language! Vlad-ee-meer Nab-awk-off (as his name should be spoke) is one of my literary heroes. Pale Fire -- ah!
I was the shadow of the waxwing slain By the false azure in the windowpane
Please try some of his stuff. A Russian Beauty, a book of short stories, is good place to start; or Details of a Sunset. From the first of these (I think), try The Potato Elf. Or start anywhere, really.
I just simply do not believe that EK (or anybody else reading this)has never sat through a few good old fashioned black and white Laurel and Hardy films and would not do so again should the opportunity present itself.
By the by, I am looking for employment at the local B&Q. Whose exams do I have to fail to qualify for the interview?
Granny, it depends on your specialities. Do you f'rinstance, *go blank* having marched briskly and purposefully to the opposite end of a large shop floor? Does your lower jaw hang open when strangers speak to you? You might be right for Focus DIY....
Yes, Laurel and Hardy! Don't tell me you can't watch Laurel and Hardy E-K!
In similar vein I once did a survey in my office (long story with which I will not bore you) and discovered that nobody under the age of 37 had ever heard of Paul Robeson, while everyone from 38 up had. My conclusion was that at some point his records ceased to be played on the radio and he was thus cast into virtual oblivion for younger people.

Who's james mason?
no, just joking, he was great in the 7th veil.

Woolworths - employer of people who failed the Argos exams...
and a bit further...asda employees failed the woolworths exams...
Some people really won't watch black and white films.
Nope - not interested.
The other issue is that our language is so different and our humour coarser. I can't see old English films ever coming back in popularity.
My brother near Bruton, lil, does a perfect james mason voice impersonation. Just so you konw.
Is this about the Lilita business? Laugh? I almost cried.

He gives you a new perspective on the world.
Suitably chastised, Dennis. Yessir. Will do :-)

Or Italian, French, German or Russian ones E-K. Nothing to do with sense of humour; it's being able to read the subtitles.
My Girl likes Hitchcock. Nice to see you HG. I have eco-pod envy :-)
Liar, liar, pants on fire..

Lilith: Thanks for your thoughts. I tried all that at Tesco's and was rjected as being over qualified.
Dennis
I loved that film, I saw it as a young boy and got an erection when he painted her toe nails.
To this day I am a keen foot fetishist.

anon, I wish I didn't know who Paul Robeson was :-( Born too early.
woolworths, a great example of why we should do all our shopping online and avoid the chav-infested place like the plague.
